KKIA Emission Reduction Commitment

  Oct 27, 2026   admin

Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) remains committed to reducing the carbon footprint of Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) through its continued participation in the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. This commitment reflects the corporation’s broader responsibility to promote environmental sustainability, strengthen climate action and support the transition towards a cleaner aviation sector.

In 2025, the airport recorded total Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions of 1,148.8 tCO2e, comprising 303.5 tCO2e of Scope 1 emissions and 845.3 tCO2e of Scope 2 emissions (location-based). As part of its ongoing climate action efforts, ZACL has committed to reducing these emissions by 30% by 2031, against the 2023 base year emissions of 1,566.5 tCO2e. This target demonstrates ZACL’s intention to take practical and measurable steps to manage greenhouse gas emissions from its operations, improve resource efficiency and contribute to national and global efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

The Corporation’s efforts are aligned with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) long-term aspirational goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions from international aviation by 2050. By pursuing emissions reduction initiatives, monitoring its carbon performance and embedding sustainability into airport operations, ZACL is contributing to the aviation industry’s shared pathway towards a low-carbon emission future.
